Celtic discussions with young defender regarding new contract that would make him the highest-paid player

Celtic are aiming to open contract talks with right-back Alistair Johnston, with plans to make him one of the club’s highest earners, according to *Daily Record*. Despite having three years left on his current deal, Celtic are keen to reward Johnston for his stellar performances since joining from CF Montreal two years ago. The 25-year-old Canadian has been a key player this season, featuring in all of Celtic’s Scottish Premiership matches, scoring once, and creating four big chances. His defensive contributions have also been vital, helping the team secure two clean sheets while winning 69% of his duels.

Manager Brendan Rodgers is eager to bring Johnston’s salary in line with other key first-team players. Initial talks with his representatives have already begun. Although Johnston suffered a hamstring injury during Canada’s 2-1 victory over the USA, it’s not expected to be serious, and further assessments will be done by Celtic’s medical team ahead of their upcoming match against Hearts.

Johnston has played a crucial role in helping Celtic start the season strongly, leading the Scottish Premiership with four wins from four games, five points ahead of rivals Rangers. With their sights set on retaining the league title and achieving another domestic treble, Celtic are also aiming to improve their performances in the UEFA Champions League after years of underwhelming European campaigns.
