Greg Oden, a former NBA player and free agent, was arrested in Indiana on charges of misdemeanor battery after allegedly punching his ex-girlfriend. The incident took place at approximately 3:30 a.m. at a house owned by Oden’s mother. According to a police report, a witness, identified as the victim’s best friend, claimed that Oden punched the victim in the face during an altercation.
Oden, who admitted to the police that he was wrong, explained that the situation escalated, leading him to strike the victim while trying to push others out of the way. The victim, a 24-year-old woman who had dated Oden for about two years before they broke up two months ago, was found by police with lacerations around her nose and forehead. Despite her injuries, the victim was reportedly uncooperative with the police and refused medical treatment.
The police report described the scene, noting blood on the floor and a sofa, as well as dirt from a knocked-over flower pot. The witness urged the victim to admit that Oden had punched her, but the victim initially claimed she had fallen.
Oden, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft and last played for the Miami Heat, was taken to an initial processing center for arrestees. As of now, no charges have been filed, and the NBA has not yet commented on the incident.
This arrest adds to a series of recent legal issues involving professional athletes, highlighting the ongoing concerns about player conduct and the handling of such incidents by sports leagues.
