Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers sends special message to family of young Irish fan who died

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has shown his compassionate side by reaching out to the family of Aoibhe Byrne, a young Celtic fan from Ireland who tragically passed away in April 2022. Aoibhe, who was just 14 years old, died following an accident in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan.

In honor of Aoibhe, a memorial tournament will be held in Carrickmacross, where eight U16 teams will compete for the Aoibhe Byrne Memorial Cup. Aoibhe was an active sports enthusiast, playing GAA with Magheracloone Ladies, basketball with Carrick Cruisers, and soccer with Carrick Rovers AFC. She was also a student at Colaiste Dun an Ri in Co Cavan.

Aoibhe’s love for Celtic was evident, and after her passing, Celtic supporters paid tribute to her during a match against Rangers, with a round of applause in the 14th minute and a banner that read: “RIP Aoibhe. #Forever14.”

Ahead of the memorial tournament, Brendan Rodgers sent a heartfelt video message to Aoibhe’s family, expressing his sorrow and offering his condolences. In the message, Rodgers acknowledged the family’s deep connection to Celtic and shared his hope that Aoibhe’s memory would be celebrated for many years to come. He also expressed his wish to meet the family in the future.

Rodgers’ gesture highlights the strong bond between the Celtic community and its fans, especially during such difficult times.
