Former Luton Town and Newport County defender Fraser Franks has been forced to retire from professional football at the age of 28 due to a heart issue. Franks, who had a notable career playing for various clubs, including Brentford, Basingstoke, AFC Wimbledon, Hayes & Yeading, Newport County, Welling United, Luton Town, and Stevenage, announced his retirement after a serious health scare led to the discovery of a heart condition.
Franks began his career with Brentford and had significant spells at several clubs, including helping Luton Town gain promotion back into the Football League in 2014. After playing over 100 matches for Stevenage, he rejoined Newport County, where he played 34 games and scored three goals in the current season, including one in what would be his final match—a 4-1 victory at Notts County.
In a heartfelt statement shared on Twitter, Franks expressed his devastation at having to retire early but emphasized that he would take the medical advice seriously. He acknowledged the support of his family, particularly his wife, as they prepare to welcome their first child in May. Franks also reflected on the highlights of his career, including captaining Newport in their FA Cup win over Leicester City and playing against Manchester City.
Franks expressed gratitude to Newport County for their support during this difficult time and looked back with pride on his achievements in football, despite his career ending prematurely. Fellow footballers, including former Luton teammates Mark Cullen and Jon Shaw, offered their support and best wishes for his future endeavors.
Franks remains optimistic about the future and hopes to stay involved in football in some capacity.
