Glasgow Celtic legend ‘lucky to be alive’ after sleeping driver smashed into car in terrifying ordeal

Former Celtic and Scotland football legend Frank McAvennie is counting his blessings after surviving a serious car crash that left him hospitalized and his vehicle totaled. The 64-year-old Glaswegian was involved in a frightening collision when another driver, who had fallen asleep at the wheel, veered into McAvennie’s VW Touareg in the Borders.

Despite his quick reflexes that likely saved his life, McAvennie sustained whiplash injuries and required medical treatment. He reflected on the terrifying incident, expressing gratitude for surviving, thanks in part to the sturdy construction of his car.

McAvennie, known for his illustrious football career with St Mirren, West Ham, and Celtic, shared his ordeal on the podcast “Let Me Be Frank,” joking that the crash was one of the scariest moments of his life, second only to “a couple of divorces.” Although he’s been unable to play golf since the accident due to the pain, he remains optimistic about his recovery.

Throughout his career, McAvennie made a name for himself both on and off the pitch, earning caps for Scotland and enjoying success with Celtic, including a league and Scottish Cup double. Despite his achievements, his footballing career was often overshadowed by his high-profile lifestyle and relationships with glamour models, earning him comparisons to George Best.
