Millwall and Montenegro goalkeeper Matija Sarkic, who had a brief loan stint at Wigan Athletic in 2017/18, passed away at the age of 26. Reports indicate that Sarkic fell ill at an apartment in Budva, Montenegro on Saturday morning. In a statement, Millwall Football Club expressed their devastation and extended their love and condolences to Sarkic’s family and friends during this incredibly sad time. The club requested privacy for his family and mentioned that no further comments would be made. Sarkic began his career in Anderlecht’s academy before joining Aston Villa in 2015. He had loan spells at Wigan, Stratford, Havant and Waterlooville, and Livingston before moving to Wolves in 2020. Sarkic played 60 games on loan at Shrewsbury, Birmingham, and Stoke before joining Millwall in August 2020, where he made 33 appearances. He made his Montenegro debut in 2019 and was on international duty just last week. The Montenegro Football Association released a statement expressing that Sarkic had passed away suddenly and described him as a beloved member of the team who always wore a smile.
