Joe Hart announced that the time has come for him to retire, as he prepares to conclude his career at the end of the season. The former England goalkeeper received a heartfelt tribute during Celtic’s final home match of the season on Saturday.
Having joined Celtic on a three-year contract from Tottenham Hotspur in 2021, Hart played a crucial role in the club’s achievement of a third consecutive Premiership title, making 37 league appearances and 48 in total across all competitions.
At 37 years of age, Hart will retire with over 700 club appearances and 75 caps for the England national team.
“It’s a poignant day, but it is indeed the right moment,” Hart expressed to Sky Sports after Celtic celebrated their Premiership victory.
“I was presented with an opportunity that I could not refuse. I was uncertain about how things would unfold… I reached a stage in my life where I had this chance, and I did not want to tempt fate. I aimed to conclude my career on a high note in this remarkable place. It is time for me to step aside and allow someone else to enjoy the game… I feel well, but I sensed that this was my moment. We have one more week ahead,” he stated.
Celtic supporters displayed a large banner reading “Super Joe Hart,” and the seasoned goalkeeper was visibly emotional as he acknowledged the fans.
Hart also donned the captain’s armband when skipper Callum McGregor was substituted, and he exited the field in the final moments to a standing ovation as he bid farewell to Celtic Park.
He played a pivotal role in Manchester City securing their first two Premier League titles in the 2011-12 and 2013-14 seasons, but he lost his position in the squad following Pep Guardiola’s appointment as manager.
After loan spells at Torino and West Ham United, Hart transferred to Burnley and Spurs before concluding his career at Celtic.
When questioned about any potential regrets regarding his retirement while still in good form, Hart remarked, “Life is about making choices, and I stand by mine.”
Hart will have the opportunity to conclude his career with one final trophy when Celtic faces Rangers in the Scottish Cup final.
