A senior supporter of Brighton and Hove Albion passed away after becoming unwell prior to the home match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
The club confirmed the unfortunate news from the American Express Community Stadium following the conclusion of the game.
The individual was at the event with his son but fell ill before the match commenced.
A statement on the club’s website expressed: “Brighton and Hove Albion is deeply saddened to announce that an elderly supporter who experienced a medical emergency before today’s match against Wolverhampton Wanderers has died.
“The fan was present at the game with his son and received immediate assistance from the club’s medical personnel before being transported by ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, where he subsequently passed away.”
Paul Barber, the chief executive of Albion, remarked: “This is tragic news, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the gentleman during this difficult time.”
Since the announcement, tributes from players and supporters of Albion have poured in. Defender Shane Duffy stated, “No one should attend a football match and not return home.
“My thoughts are with the family and friends of the Brighton supporter who did not make it home.”
Another supporter commented: “My condolences go out to the Brighton and Hove Albion fan, along with his family and friends, who sadly passed away during yesterday’s match against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Rest in peace.”
Saturday has been characterized as a sorrowful day for football, marked by the death of the Brighton fan, the serious illness of former England manager Glenn Hoddle, and a helicopter crash at the King Power Stadium in Leicester.
One football enthusiast shared, “Who’s leading? Who’s lost? Who’s at the bottom? Who scored? It all means nothing. A Brighton fan will not return to his family, Glen Hoddle is fighting for his life, and the events in Leicester are beyond comprehension. I am heartbroken.”
Glenn Murray, a forward for Albion, expressed his sentiments by stating, “My thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted by the tragic events of yesterday. The helicopter crash in Leicester and the unfortunate passing of an elderly Brighton and Hove Albion supporter weigh heavily on my heart. I also wish Glenn Hoddle a swift recovery. Although we may support different teams, the football community stands united in offering support to them and their families.”
The helicopter belonging to the owner of Leicester City tragically crashed in a car park adjacent to the club’s stadium on Saturday. It has been confirmed that Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, the club’s owner, was aboard the aircraft at the time of the incident. Additionally, on Saturday, Glenn Hoddle experienced a heart attack while at the BT Sport studios, but reports indicate that he is responding positively to treatment.
