Glasgow Rangers saw the departure of one of their most experienced players, central defender Connor Goldson, at the end of last month. This move is part of the squad overhaul led by Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen. In addition to Goldson, other senior first-team players such as John Lundstram, Borna Barisic, Kemar Roofe, Ryan Jack, and Jon McLaughlin also left as free agents at the end of their contracts. Now, Rangers are reportedly interested in signing Bristol City centre-forward Tommy Conway to replace Roofe. However, Middlesbrough currently seems to be leading the race to secure his signature, so Rangers must act quickly if they want to bring him to Ibrox.
Bristol Live recently reported that Boro have submitted a bid of up to £5m for the Scottish dynamo, but it remains uncertain whether Rangers will match it.
Roofe served as a backup striker for Rangers but was deemed too unreliable even for that role due to consistent fitness problems throughout his time at Ibrox.
Over four years, the forward missed a minimum of 12 games per season due to injury and was absent for a total of 70 matches across the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons combined.
On the other hand, Conway has only missed ten games due to injury in his entire career so far, indicating his reliability and availability to provide consistent competition.
As shown in the table above, the Bristol City standout is coming off a strong Championship season with his current club.
The 21-year-old talent, praised as “gifted” by EFL manager Steve Evans, consistently contributes to his team and could pose a greater attacking threat than Roofe based on recent goal-scoring records.
At 21 years old, he represents a long-term investment for Clement to develop over time, unlike the more experienced Jamaica international Roofe, who had limited potential for improvement.
