Uefa to investigate Spanish players’ Gibraltar chant

Uefa has initiated a disciplinary procedure following the actions of Spain captain Alvaro Morata and midfielder Rodri, who sang “Gibraltar is Spanish” during their European Championship celebrations. The governing body of European soccer announced on Friday that they have assigned an ethics and disciplinary inspector to investigate the incident and determine whether it breaches their disciplinary regulations. During the victory celebrations in Madrid on Monday, Morata, Rodri, and other senior players sang about Gibraltar, a British territory situated at the southern tip of Spain, in front of a large audience. The Gibraltar Football Association lodged a formal complaint with Uefa on Thursday, denouncing the chant as highly offensive to Gibraltarians. Despite Spain ceding Gibraltar to Britain in 1713, they have persistently advocated for its return.
