Dennis Praet is on the cusp of securing his dream position following his release from Leicester City.
The Belgian forward was released from his contract at the conclusion of his term, marking the end of his tenure at the King Power Stadium. It is now believed he is in the process of securing a move back to Italy, the nation he has always considered his top choice.
According to Sky Sport Italia, he is currently in discussions with Lecce, who placed 14th in Serie A last season. Praet’s profile in Italy remains strong, having spent three solid seasons at Sampdoria before joining City, and another year on loan at Torino.
During his time in Turin, Praet made a significant impact, leading Torino to victory in 12 out of 23 Serie A matches he played, with only one loss. He had expressed a desire to return to the city, but his move was blocked by City.
In May, Praet mentioned in an interview with Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad: “It’s true that Italy will always be my first choice. I had my best years abroad at Sampdoria and Torino. The tactical football in Italy is something I really enjoy. Plus, life there is wonderful, and I can speak the language.
“Right now, I’m looking for the perfect fit. I understand that a top-four team in a top league won’t just offer me a spot. However, if I end up at a decent mid-range club where I can play a crucial role, that’s also acceptable. And if it’s in a place where my family can enjoy life, that would be an added bonus.
“Leicester City thought I was too valuable to sell, too versatile to be let go cheaply. I’m not one to argue or push for a transfer. However, I’m open to considering Torino now.”
Leicester City, on the other hand, is in need of a forward. In addition to releasing Praet, they opted not to bring back Yunus Akgun from his loan at Galatasaray, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has been transferred to Chelsea.
Wilfred Ndidi has signed a new contract, but there’s a possibility he could shift to a defensive role this season. This leaves Leicester City with only young players in the central attacking midfield positions, including the recent acquisition Michael Golding and the promising young player Will Alves.
