Prospect Leon Routh of Luton Town is allegedly close to finalizing a transfer to Premier League team Aston Villa.
The adolescent defender has been a member of the Hatters academy for a while; last season, he played for the U18s, who won the Youth Alliance South East Division championship for the second consecutive year. Town manager Rob Edwards demonstrated during the team’s Premier League campaign that he was not hesitant to give his teenage players experience in the top division by occasionally starting 16-year-old Christian Chigozie on the bench alongside Joe Johnson, Zack Nelson, Jayden Luker, Axel Piesold, and Dominic Dos Santos Martins.
The Secret Scout, a media outlet, stated on Twitter that “Aston Villa is closing in on highly rated 16-year-old center back Leon Routh from Luton Town.” Routh, however, may be one that gets past the Hatters, who recently hired former defender Joe Deeney to oversee the U18s this season. Player has accepted the terms. Fee to be agreed upon.
Luton and Villa have already conducted business during the off-season as the Midlands club acquired midfielder Ross Barkley for an unknown sum after Barkley had an outstanding season in the top division with the Hatters. The Villans can participate in Premier League 2, a league consisting of 26 teams, because they have a Category One academy. They qualified for the play-offs after finishing 16th in the previous season with seven wins, four draws, and nine losses. However, they were eliminated in the first round, losing 4-3 to Spurs U21s in overtime.
