Rangers of the SPFL, who might be interested in the 24-year-old, have been linked to Dion Sanderson as a prospective departure from Birmingham City.
The Daily Record claims that the Englishman, who captained the Blues the previous season, has drawn interest from the Gers after facing relegation from the Championship.
Dion made 37 appearances for St Andrews last season, including a goalless tie with Rotherham in which he lost his captaincy because of an off-field disciplinary issue.
With only 32 goals conceded in their second-place finish from the previous campaign, Rangers will probably want to bolster their defense if they intend to retain their ambitions of winning the league crown, especially since 36-year-old Leon Balogun is only going to get older.
Despite the increase in competition, Sanderson will probably be expected to play frequently if he is to be lured away from St Andrews this summer.
With four years remaining on his contract and only 24 years old, the captain will not be in a rush to leave Birmingham this summer despite having only joined the team at the start of the previous campaign. This will work in the Blues’ favor.
In an Instagram post on June 13th, Dion demonstrated his commitment to the club by hinting that he will be sticking around. The caption read:
Greetings, Bluenoses It’s been a while since I used social media. I thought it was necessary for me to stand back and consider the previous several months. It’s been difficult to handle as a person, a player, and a captain. For my errors, both on and off the field, I want to sincerely apologize to each and every one of you. My house is in Birmingham City. Being able to represent this football team and experience the love and support of the supporters from the moment I go into the stadium until I leave is an honor. I can’t wait for the season to begin and to return to work with a lot more determination, focus, and fortitude. I’m confident that working together, we can overcome this setback and get the club back on track. Most of all, thank you, and I hope to see you all very soon. Your assistance has been amazing. KROπππ
Last season, players like Krystian Bielik and Marc Roberts frequently outperformed Sanderson, which may suggest that Chris Davies, the team’s new manager, wouldn’t be opposed to losing the 24-year-old should they receive an offer.
But Sanderson has been a mainstay of the club this year, and the Blues would need to find a replacement when he performed poorly since it was evident how it affected the team.
After relegation, the club captain might be on a long list of players who want to go, therefore it might be preferable for them to hold onto him.
