How Man Utd could line up with Joshua Zirkzee next season

Manchester United are on the verge of signing Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna to strengthen their frontline. The Dutchman played a pivotal role in helping Bologna secure a top-four finish and caught the attention of AC Milan and Arsenal. However, it appears that United have emerged as the frontrunners to secure his services.

As Zirkzee prepares to make his move to Old Trafford, let’s take a look at how United could potentially line up with him in the team. Last season, manager Thiago Motta often deployed a lone striker in his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation. Occasionally, he would switch to a 4-1-4-1 or a 4-3-3 setup. Similarly, United’s manager Erik ten Hag has also favored the 4-2-3-1 formation.

In Ten Hag’s system, Rasmus Hojlund was the first-choice striker. However, when Hojlund was either out of form or injured, United lacked a suitable replacement. With Zirkzee, who excels as a lone forward, Ten Hag now has more options at his disposal, providing him with a luxury he didn’t have last season.

Although Zirkzee’s preferred position is up front, he is not a striker who solely stays in the box waiting for chances. The 23-year-old is versatile enough to also play in the number 10 role in a 4-2-3-1 system. While he may not possess the same creative abilities as Bruno Fernandes, Zirkzee can provide support to the striker.

Overall, the addition of Zirkzee will undoubtedly bolster Manchester United’s attacking options and provide Ten Hag with more flexibility in his team’s formation.
