Goalie for Millwall, 26, passes away while condolences for Matija Sarkic are being sent. It is reported that Matija Sarkic, who left Wolves to sign with Millwall last summer, became unwell in the Montenegrin town of Budva and tragically died at the age of just 26.

Tragically, 26-year-old Millwall goalie Matija Sarkic passed away after becoming ill. The Montenegro international, who was born in Grimsby and played for several British teams, including Aston Villa, Wolves, Birmingham City, and Stoke City, is said to have fallen unwell at an apartment in Budva after returning from international duty. Despite his companions’ quick call for an ambulance, he passed away on Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m. local time.

Last Thursday, Sarkic got the start in Montenegro’s 2-0 friendly loss to Belgium and was voted man of the match for his outstanding nine saves. The goalie was a member of the academy of Anderlecht, a large Belgian team, before moving to Villa. He was loaned to Wigan Athletic, Stratford Town, Havant & Waterlooville, and Livingston during his five-year stint. In 2020, Sarkic relocated to Wolves, but much like at Villa, he never played in the first team.

Following loan stints with Shrewsbury Town, Birmingham City, and Stoke City, he was finally recruited by Millwall for a long-term contract on a permanent basis last summer for an unknown sum. Sarkic played in 33 games during the most recent season. “Millwall Football Club is completely devastated to announce that Matija Sarkic has passed away at the age of 26,” the statement from Milwall said, confirming his passing. The top goalie for The Lions, Sarkic, joined the team in August 2023 from Wolverhampton Wanderers and has since made 33 appearances.

Matija was a proud international for Montenegro who played a number of key roles for his nation. At this deeply sad moment, everyone at the club is sending love and condolences to Matija’s family and friends. The club requests that Matija’s family’s privacy be respected and will not be commenting further at this time.” “What terrible news to wake up to this morning that our goalkeeper Matija Sarkic has passed away at the young age of 26,” the Millwall Supporters’ Club wrote on X. Tragic news for his loved ones, friends, and those of us who are connected to Millwall. A lion is a lion once, always.”

  1. It’s outrageous that at just 26 years of age, Matty should be taken, with such a long life ahead, and one full of potential. He had established himself as No 1 at Millwall, No 1 for his country, Montenegro, and would have been so for years to come. Rest in Peace Matty, once a Lion always a Lion.
