Doug King has assured Coventry City supporters that the team is “on it right now” in terms of strengthening its roster in order to return to the Premier League the following year. The owner of Sky Blues is obviously hesitant to say too much, having told manager Mark Robins and his staff to remain silent over the club’s summer transfer window activity. However, he did admit that he has already had a lot of calls as he looks to bolster the current roster.
King acknowledges that it will continue to be a balancing act going forward as Coventry, like other Championship clubs, continues to run at a loss. City missed the play-offs this time around, primarily because of a lack of depth to handle the game calendar and injuries.
Inquired about the summer transfer budget, the size of the roster that will be required following the release of Liam Kelly and Simon Moore, as well as the most recent developments regarding Callum O’Hare (who has been offered new terms but is anticipated to depart on a free transfer), “As I say to our manager and staff, ‘no comment,'” King told BBC CWR.
See, things will happen as they will. Our recruitment staff has grown significantly. I observe their actions and their job. I can picture the topics we are presently discussing and the in-depth research we will be doing. “This season, we slipped a little bit; the way our cup run transpired was definitely exhausting. We want to compete and we are aware of all those scenarios. Real depth in anything is problematic since, obviously, having too many players means paying them more, which may discourage them from playing. The problem is that if you are frequently injured, they might play.
The executive chairman stated, “We’re trying to reduce injuries,” and listed several proactive measures the team is taking to keep the players healthy. The three pitches at the stadium and Ryton remain the same as they were before, and we are keeping a close eye on everything. “Claire-Marie Roberts has been appointed as our performance director to ensure that we avoid injuries as much as possible and improve our strength and conditioning.”
Regarding recent additions, he stated: “Next year’s players… See, I want us to move up the ranks. I am a driven individual who considers all aspects carefully. If we can build our team from the ground up, starting with the strong foundation and core we now have, we will go forward. And trust me when I say that we are currently on it. There are far too many calls pouring in for me.
We’re talking about it and working on it, so let me inform the Sky Blue Army and all of our supporters that we’ve been here for about 15 months and have had a few amazing adventures. Although we haven’t quite reached our goal, we’re going to give it everything we’ve got. He then on, “We just want to continue to build on that and take us to the next step. We took over Wembley and showed everybody what Coventry is about, who supports Coventry, and how much passion they have for it.”
