Jack Butland relished the tranquility in Seville. Now, as the number one goalkeeper for Rangers, he hopes that his team can leave Celtic Park speechless as they strive to make a comeback in the title race.
The Ibrox team will face a tough challenge at Parkhead this afternoon, entering a fiery atmosphere without any away fans to support them. Securing a victory under these circumstances would certainly defy the bookmakers’ odds, who have labeled Philippe Clement’s men as 3-1 underdogs.
However, Butland is not surprised by the challenge. He believes that the team only needs to reflect on their trip to Spain in December to see that they have overcome even greater obstacles. During their Europa League match against Real Betis at the Estadio Benito Villamarin, the Light Blues faced a team that had not lost at home in seven months and had recently drawn against Champions League finalists Real Madrid.
Despite the odds, Clement’s team emerged victorious with a memorable 3-2 win, claiming the top spot in their section. Now, their task is to silence the Green Brigade and the rest of the Parkhead faithful.
Butland stated, “You face that hostility. I remember playing against Betis in Seville. It’s a different kind of atmosphere. You’re in the arena, everyone is against you, and you have to rise to the occasion.”
“Unfortunately, the result in our last visit to Celtic Park wasn’t what we wanted, but there were opportunities. So, we still believe in ourselves. There is definitely a chance for us to achieve something special.”
When asked if his team needs to summon the same spirit that led to their remarkable victory in Seville, Butland replied, “You could say that. We’ve been written off before this season, but we’ve proven people wrong. We are not afraid; we have confidence in our squad. Despite not getting the desired results in previous games, we know that opportunities have been there.”
So, the Rangers are ready to face the challenge head-on and make their mark.
