The owner of Hull City has disclosed that he fired Liam Rosenior because of the way the squad plays. The Turkish owner of the Tigers, Acun Ilicali, abruptly fired Rosenior this week, despite the player’s excellent season and the team’s narrow miss to the Championship play-offs. The owner, who only last December had awarded Rosenior a new, long-term deal, has been open about the problems that surfaced in the second half of the season and led to this choice.
Ilicali stated in an interview with talkSPORT on Wednesday morning that he wanted to see the team play the game more offensively. According to Hull Live, he stated: “It is not ideal for the team to embark for a long-term journey when there is a difference of thinking between the coach’s side and the ownership and the football mind of the squad.
“Liam is an excellent coach and a great man. He seems like such a kind guy, but ultimately, we have to decide what’s best for the team. Even though Hull scored 14 goals in their last seven games of the season, Ilicali still prefers a more progressive brand of football. “I totally respect Liam’s football philosophy,” he continued. However, Liam’s playing style is not the kind of football I want to see in my team.”
In response to host Jim White’s query on why he extended Rosenior’s contract in the middle of the season, Ilicali said that things started to change in January. “The separation started after January,” he disclosed. We brought in offensive players in January. The team’s attacking recruitment strategy is a result of its football mindset. “You need to locate a coach who shares the recruitment’s mindset. We were in the same location as Liam before to January. After that, I want to lean back in my chair and cheer for the squad. I want the audience to become increasingly animated.
“To sum up, we want a very excellent coach with an offensive kind of thinking, but I think Liam is a very talented coach with a certain football philosophy. We took alternative routes because of this.”
