In the year 2034, Scotland has once again qualified for the World Cup. Derek McInnes, who took over as the coach after Steve Clarke’s departure, is now preparing to select his squad for the upcoming finals in Saudi Arabia. Despite concerns about the heat, Saudi officials have convinced Fifa that their air-conditioned stadiums can accommodate a summer World Cup.
While McInnes appreciates the sunshine, his main concern lies with the welfare of his players, whom he deeply cares about. Among his squad, there is one player with whom he shares a special bond, as they have a long history together.
The nominees for the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year are David Watson from Kilmarnock, Lyle Cameron from Dundee, Ross McCausland from Rangers, and Lennon Miller from Motherwell.
McInnes entrusted the captain’s armband to David Watson at the start of the qualifying matches. Watson had established himself in the Manchester City first team and had previously played under McInnes at Kilmarnock. The 29-year-old midfielder is highly anticipated, especially after winning the English title with City, their 14th consecutive title. He has been eagerly waiting for the opportunity to shine on the world stage since being recognized as the best young player in Scotland in 2024 by his fellow professionals.
Although it may seem like a captivating daydream, it is not entirely unrealistic. Let’s take a trip back in time to ten years ago this month. Celtic was on their way to winning the Scottish title with a 29-point lead over Motherwell, while Hearts and Hibs faced relegation. Andy Robertson, who was just 20 years old at the time, was preparing to receive the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year award after an impressive debut season in the Scottish Premiership with Dundee United.
At that point, Robertson had played only 39 matches for Dundee United, with a Scottish Cup final against St Johnstone still to come. He was already showing signs of becoming a star and was soon transferred to England, where his journey continued.
