In their final two games of the season, Coventry City will strive to avoid their fourth straight league loss when they play Blackburn Rovers, a team hoping to ensure their spot in the Championship by putting some distance between themselves and the bottom three.
Even though Rovers are in 19th place with 49 points, they are still vulnerable because third-place Birmingham is only three points behind and could catch them if John Eustace’s team loses to the Sky Blues at home before a challenging trip to Leicester City, the eventual champions, on the final day of the season.
Mark Robins, on the other hand, is taking a severely diminished team to Ewood Park because of injuries; the most recent casualties include Fabio Tavares, Victor Torp, Joel Latibeaudiere, and Luis Binks, in addition to winger Tatsuhiro Sakamoto’s extended absence. Tavares, the young forward, is undoubtedly out, and the manager will assess the other three today. “If we are going to have to play youngsters as well, then that’s what we are going to have to do,” the manager said on Wednesday night. But based on form, there is one major question that needs to be answered. Brad Collins had a terrible performance on Wednesday night, allowing Hull’s first goal to bobble over him and into the net. He also failed to commit and put his foot through the ball when Bobby Thomas underhit a back pass to him, which allowed Noah Ohio to score the game-winning goal in the 3-2 loss at CBS Arena.
Ben Wilson made City history last season when he scored to secure a last-minute point in a 1-1 draw, so don’t be shocked if he is given the go-ahead to return against Rovers.
Three of City’s back four might choose themselves, with Milan van Ewijk at right back, Bobby Thomas and Liam Kiching at center half, and either Jake Bidwell or Jay Dasilva on the left, given the team’s injury issues. Given that Robins had said the loan defender had earned a spell in the starting lineup, Binks would be the favorite to return to left center-back if healthy.
Josh Eccles and Ben Sheaf are the favorites to start in midfield, but Liam Kelly proved on Wednesday night that he still has a lot to offer with a classic performance. Given that City plays Ipswich on Tuesday, it would make sense to employ Kelly again. If Latibeaudiere is ruled out, that would free up Eccles to play wide and high on the right, preventing van Ewijk from filling in as the right winger.
