OVERLOOKED Since joining the Hoops for £1 million in the summer, Celt Kwon Hyeok-kyu has not booted a ball in a competitive game.
But the midfielder from South Korea might be crucial to the champions’ quest for a third straight championship this year. Kwon, who arrived to St Mirren on loan in January, joined from K-League team Busan IPark in July along with winger Yang Hyun-jun.
The former Under-21 international is hoping to receive the go-ahead from manager Stephen Robinson to play in his team’s Premiership match against Philippe Clement’s Ibrox team on Sunday for his ninth league appearance. The game against Dundee is set to begin at 12.30 p.m. at Dens Park, with Brendan Rodgers’ team taking the field at 3 p.m.
In his first game as a Saint, Kwon gave a Man of the Match performance against the Govan club, although the hosts were defeated by a goal from Cyriel Dessers. With five league games remaining, Clement’s team is three points behind the Parkhead men heading into this match. The 23-year-old enforcer is looking for better luck this time around. For Hoops supporters, Kwon remains a mystery as he has not yet been involved in a competitive match. At the beginning of August, he participated for 45 minutes in James Forrest’s Testimonial Match at Parkhead versus Athletic Bilbao.
Interestingly, though, Kwon could be given the chance to contribute to Celtic’s twelfth title triumph in thirteen years on Sunday. Rodgers used 22 players that evening as the Northern Irishman returned to the east end of Glasgow after a four and a half-year absence. Kwon also substituted for Matt O’Riley in the 61st minute of the 1-1 draw with Wolves at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium in another pre-season game.
