Rangers: Disgust at footage of Ross County loss as ex-ref disputed live on Sky Sports

Michael Dawson became enraged after seeing footage of the Rangers’ late-game penalty call against Ross County, calling it “so harsh.”

After watching a video of Brandon Khela being struck in the hand late in the 3-2 loss to the Gers last weekend (April 14), the former Tottenham defender reacted angrily live on Sky Sports Soccer on Saturday, April 20, contesting referee Matthew MacDermid’s decision to award a spot kick following a VAR review.

Although Scottish football has regularly interpreted such events this season based on the defender’s high hand, former Premier League official Mike Dean acknowledged that the call was predictable. Dawson, however, remained unmoved and called referees north of the border “consistently wrong”.

It’s unfortunate that it was flicked on right in front of him, but his arm is just so high that, in my judgment, it was the right call—a penalty kick. Dean stated as much at 1:29 p.m.

How severe. So severe,” intervened Dawson.

Dean went on, “Well, what I would say to you is that it wasn’t surprising because in Scotland they’ve been consistent with that kind of decision all season.”

Dawson mocked, “Looking at that, you’re consistently wrong.” Sincerely, given that, I’m not sure what the defender can do. He simply lifted his arm slightly away from his body; it is not in an unusual position. I found it to be really severe.

Spurs legend furious at Rangers’ penalty in Dingwall

It’s understandable that a number of pundits in Scotland often take offense at handball calls of this nature, even though there is occasionally a propensity to just bemoan any VAR involvement.

It is not always appropriate to wave something away just because it is unpleasant or even inevitable, but it can be challenging for defenders if a ball inadvertently deflects into their hand.

Although Michael Stewart has been known to lose his cool in situations similar to that, especially when the Rangers are winning, it doesn’t seem to be having much of an impact right now because Philippe Clement’s team is struggling so hard.

Even though James Tavernier came up to score the game’s final kick at Dingwall, it was unable to keep his team from losing 3-2, a crushing loss that gave Celtic a significant advantage in the race for the championship.

In the loss against Ross County, Philippe Clement witnessed the Rangers blow the opportunity to win the title battle.

Then, to cap off that defeat with a depressingly boring goalless draw in the twice-rescheduled trip to Dundee has all but destroyed aspirations of winning a league title for the first time in three years.

The biggest chance to win more trophies this season now stands against Lawrence Shankland and Hearts in the Scottish Cup semi-final on Sunday, April 21. Clement will need to respond quickly.

In other Rangers news, it has been announced that a “huge” number of players will be leaving Ibrox.
