Rangers penalty retake snub explained as IFAB rule in focus after James Tavernier miss - Football Scotland

James Tavernier’s penalty for Rangers in yesterday’s 3-1 win over Hibs was not re-taken due to the IFAB rule on encroachment.

The captain was handed the chance to net from the spot when John Souttar was clattered by Nectaris Triantis but David Marshall, the Hibs goalkeeper, would ultimately palm away the defender’s efforts. Scott Wright would go on to slot home the rebound but that goal was ruled out by VAR as Wright had entered the box before the initial strike was taken.

Many punters would have expected a second penalty effort for Tavernier but the rules of the game state that only when a penalty is scored and there’s attacking encroachment then it’s retaken. Not if it’s saved or missed, where a free-kick for the opposition is awarded.
