Aston Villa were pleased to return to Premier League action with a win following the international break, as Unai Emery watched one of his stars dazzle against Wolves. It was derby day delight for Aston Villa, who ensured that the three points remained at Villa Park when Wolves came to town.
After the international break, it was imperative that Unai Emery’s side returned with a win in the Premier League, with the race for the top four heating up.
Earlier on Saturday afternoon, Spurs leapfrogged Villa momentarily to occupy fourth however, Villa’s 2-0 win over their Midlands rivals ensured that they soon returned to the top four.
Goals from Moussa Diaby and Ezri Konsa sealed the win for the hosts in a fixture that saw more than just the goalscorers shine at Villa Park.
As Jacob Ramsey remained out of contention as he recovers from injury, January arrival Morgan Rogers was granted another Premier League start on the left flank.
The Englishman dazzled against Wolves, showcasing his ball-carrying ability at a time when the Villans needed inspiration due to key absences.
One figure who was particularly impressed by the 21-year-old’s performance was BBC Sport pundit Paul Robinson, who dubbed the England U21 international an “absolute beast” for his approach to play.
“Morgan Rogers looked like an absolute beast running through the midfield. Anyone of two or three players could have brought him down, but it was fantastic play from him.”
It was a dominant 63-minute showing from Rogers, who in that time completed 100% of his long balls, 100% of the five dribbles he attempted, won eight ground duels and was fouled twice for his trickery, via Sofascore.
No one doubted the ability of Rogers, who arrived from Middlesbrough in January after contributing to eight goals in the first half of the Championship season, there was just some thought over how long it would take the youngster to adapt to the Premier League.
In his first few outings as a Villan, the 21-year-old showed just how direct he can be however, his performance against Wolves proved exactly why Monchi and Emery were so keen to sign him.
With games coming thick and fast, the versatile forward will have a big part to play in the run-in to May, with European silverware and Champions League qualification there for Villa to play for.
It was an impressive day at the office for Rogers against Wolves, who gave another insight into just the calibre of player he could develop to be.
