Rangers want to secure deal for ex-Premier League enforcer who is Ibrox legend in making

If a footballer’s career normally lasts the best part of 20 years, you’d forgive John Lundstram for putting his own interests ahead of a new Rangers contract.

The 30-year-old Scouser is out of contract in the summer, three years on from signing a lucrative deal to join Rangers from Sheffield United This might be John Lundstram’s final chance to secure a lucrative contract for himself and his family and most Rangers fans would forgive the midfielder for considering it.

In the same situation, we would do the same.

But amid suggestions from Philippe Clement that he’s confident the particulars of a deal with Lunny will be thrashed out, legendary status potentially awaits the midfielder depending on how the next few years go.Speaking ahead of the Scottish Premiership clash with Hibs, Philippe Clement explained that contract negotiations with John Lundstram are ongoing.

But pressed on the situation – reiterating the same messaging as previously – it’s clear all parties want a deal to be done and Clement suggested it’s only a matter of time.

John Lundstram is one of six Rangers first-teamers out of contract in the summer but if there is anyone who deserves a new deal based on the last few months, it’s the midfield enforcer.

When asked if there was any update on John Lundstram’s contract, Philippe Clement responded: “No, because otherwise you guys would know.”  When asked if he was confident a deal could get done, Clement added: “Yes, I am totally confident about that, that there’s a lot of love from both sides so then there will be a solution one moment.”The term legend isn’t one we use lightly either; there are ex-players aplenty and icons amongst them but only a few genuinely deserve such a title at Ibrox.

It’s a title afforded those who make the greatest sacrifices in the name of the club and who – most importantly – win trophies in Glasgow.

Signing a contract at Rangers when the Ibrox side were Premiership champions, something tells us it irks the John Lundstram that he’s yet to get his hands on the trophy.

But if the ex-Premier League midfielder can lift it this season, and build on that going forward, there might be a special place in Ibrox history reserved for him.

John Lundstram turned down Premier League options to join Rangers in 2021 and after three up-and-down years in Glasgow looks set to commit even more.

Whether that’s two or three seasons we’ll have to wait and see but the stage is set for the midfielder to be central to any success we might have over the next few years.
