Philippe Clement admits “room for improvement” in crucial area, Rangers “working hard” behind the scenes

It’s fair to say that when Philippe Clement came into Rangers, improving the club’s set-pieces was low down on a list of priorities. After all, the Belgian manager was walking into a dressing room devoid of confidence and a club lacking leadership from the pitch to the stands.

In a short period of time since taking the reins in October, Clement has steadied the ship at Rangers and has the club very much in the hunt for the most unexpected of trebles.

But as injuries begin to relent and the dust begins to settle, the Rangers boss admits that the club’s training focus has been on fine tuning the smaller details.

Philippe Clement on set pieces

Specifically, this means Rangers have been focusing on improving things like set pieces which have been a substantial gripe of Ibrox supporters for some time.

There’s a sentiment in the stands that Rangers have underperformed in this regard both offensively and defensively and it’s something echoed by Philippe Clement.

The Rangers manager claims that there is hard work going on behind the scenes to improve the club’s performance from dead-ball opportunities as the team strive to become better in every department.

“There’s certainly room for improvement,” said Clement. “Because of that we are training for that every week and before every game.

“So for sure there is room for improvement in the delivery, in the runs, in the timing also, in the way of heading. So we’re working on that hard.”

Philippe Clement is a genuinely straight-talking leader and you get the impression he’ll leave no stone unturned in the hunt for success.

In fact, in the same press conference the Rangers manager claimed that even whilst his stars were on international duty, he was checking in on them around the clock.

Why? Because if he didn’t, then he’d barely sleep a wink.

“I want to know everything,” said Clement. “I track everything, otherwise I cannot sleep. We know everything of them.

“Of course, if they do too much you don’t have control on that so that’s something that I need to let go, that’s part of our lives as managers of clubs.

“I think a lot of managers have problems with that sometimes but with a lot of federations there’s a really good contact.

“It’s important because it’s important for us but for them also. If the players perform here well and develop well, it’s better for the national teams also.”

Rangers are now set to enter the business end of the campaign but even if everything goes to plan in the remainder of the season, it’s clear Philippe Clement is only just getting started.

That’s an exciting prospect for Ibrox fans, who appear to have finally got the right man for the job.
