The Dutch side were desperate to land the 26-year-old and went over their budget to do do
Utrecht chief Frans van Seumeren was eager to push through a deal for Sam Lammers despite his early season struggles at Rangers.
The attacking midfielder was a flop at Ibrox after a £3.5million summer move from Atalanta, immediately failing to convince and never really coming back from it. Former boss Michael Beale tried to persist with him but after he was sacked and replaced by Philippe Clement, the Dutchman was phased out.
Come January, the 26-year-old was available for transfer and Utrecht were quick to swoop and take him back to his homeland. They weren’t a million miles away from the Eredivisie relegation spots and were in need of a boost and it appears to have paid off with Lammers impressing.
Club owner van Seumeren has explained why he was soo keen to get a deal done and even went over and above his budget.
He told De Beslissers podcast: “I more or less pushed through to get Lammers.”At one point, Jordy (Zuidam, technical director) and Ron (Jans, head coach) did a really good job and approached him. And, in the end, it was clear that Lammers wanted to come.
“A rent (loan fee) had to be paid, but it was not in the budget. So then you have to figure it out. At that moment, I put a little pressure on it. (It was) logical, because I saw that we were short of a striker.
“You don’t want to be relegated. You don’t want to get yourself into that misery, because then they’ll hang me from the (Utrecht) cathedral! So then I thought, let’s get Lammers.
