Ipswich Town’s Kieffer Moore and Nathan Broadhead faced disappointment in Cardiff as Wales failed to secure a spot at Euro 2024.

Rob Page’s team needed a victory against Poland to advance to the tournament’s group stages, following their 4-1 win over Finland last week to reach the play-off final.

Moore, who played the entire match, was active throughout, posing a threat from set pieces and testing Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. His most promising opportunity came early in the second half when Neco Williams’ free-kick found him in the box, but his header was tipped over the bar. He also drew more fouls and won more aerial duels than any other player on the pitch.

Broadhead entered the game during extra time, replacing David Brooks in the 112th minute, but his time on the field wasn’t enough to prevent the match from going to penalties, marking Wales’ first professional shoot-out in their history.

During the penalty shootout, Moore took the second spot-kick, with his powerful shot hitting the crossbar and bouncing over the line. However, despite Moore’s effort, Poland successfully converted all five of their penalties, leading to Daniel James needing to score to force sudden death. Unfortunately, the Leeds United winger’s attempt was stopped by Szczesny, securing Poland’s place in the tournament alongside France, the Netherlands, and Austria in Group D.

Georgia and Ukraine also secured their places in Euro 2024 by defeating Greece and Iceland respectively in the play-offs, finalizing the tournament’s lineup.

The match marked the end of the international break for Ipswich Town, with Jeremy Sarmiento and Cameron Burgess playing their last matches earlier in the week.

Moore and Broadhead will now return to Suffolk in preparation for Friday’s match against Blackburn Rovers, while Wales international Wes Burns missed out on his country’s Euro 2024 qualifiers due to a hamstring injury.
