Lemina is a very combative player and so, naturally, he is going to end up giving fouls away in games. Earlier this season, the former Fulham and Southampton man was finding himself getting booked quite a bit.But that has simply not been the case this calendar year, with Lemina really managing to stay out of the referee’s notebook of late.
This is something journalist Nathan Judah noticed and spoke about on the latest Keen & Judah Show over on Shots!. He said: “From a booking point of view, he loves a booking does Mario Lemina. But actually, only since I think, Christmas Eve, the Chelsea game, when he picked up his eighth booking of the season, he’s only picked up one booking since then.
“He’s definitely cleaned up that side of his game as well. Staring down the barrel of a two-game ban potentially not going to happen. So that’s good news for Wolves as well.”
So far in 2024, Lemina has been yellow-carded just once – against Brentford in the Premier League on February 10. In the first half of the season, he was booked eight times, with two of those leading to a red against Aston Villa in Bournemouth.
Lemina has been fantastic for Wolves this season, but he deserves additional credit for making improvements in this particular area of his game.
Given the type of player he is, it’s probably pretty difficult to stay out of the referee’s book. He is a physical player, a disruptor and a ball-winner. He’s also a very passionate character, and this can sometimes lead to bookings for dissent.
To have been booked only once in 2024 so far is really good going from him, and shows the £10 million star is getting more and more mature.
It’s good for Wolves, because Gary O’Neil could really do without losing him through suspension, given he is such a key player.
But Lemina needs to try and continue this good behaviour for a few more games at least. As per the Premier League, any player picking up 10 bookings before the 32nd fixture of the season will receive a two-game ban.
