Don’t see him as a future Rangers player’ – Pundit view: ‘Talented’ ace under contract to leave

Derek Ferguson doesn’t see Ianis Hagi playing for Rangers in the future and expects him to leave the club.

The Romanian attacker has barely featured for the Light Blues in over two years after spending 12 months out with a serious knee injury before going on loan to Alaves this term.

Right after his father had shot down suggestions Hagi junior wanted to depart, he indicated last week that he hopes to remain in La Liga long term due to how it suits his game, despite speaking highly of his time with the Gers.

And while Ferguson can’t fault the 25-year-old’s effort during his stay in Glasgow he feels a move away is now most likely despite having a few years left on his Rangers deal.

He exclusively told Ibrox News: “I know that he is still contracted, he is a talented boy, but he just needs to get himself fit and play games.

“In the back of my mind I don’t see him as a future Rangers player. I see him plying his trade somewhere else.

“When he was at Rangers I’ll never criticise players if they give their all. They might not be good enough at times, they might not perform to the best of their ability, but as long as you give your all that’ll do for me.

“And that’s what Hagi did so that’s why I tip my cap to him”.

Ianis Hagi set for Rangers exit with Ibrox hero’s blessing

Things have moved on a long way in the time Hagi has been in Spain, with Philippe Clement taking over from Michael Beale.

And while that might have opened the door for a fresh start it appears the player himself has designs on a permanent exit and Ferguson feels it is the best move all round.

Perhaps if he had never picked up the serious injury at the start of 2022 his career would have remained at Ibrox long-term but it appears that isn’t on the cards any longer.

In other Rangers news, another long-term Ibrox player is also set to leave the club.
