John Souttar, a Rangers defender, has come under fire from Stephen McGowan for his performance on the bench during Friday’s Scotland loss to the Netherlands (March 22).
On Saturday, March 23, the journalist wrote on page 107 of the Scottish Daily Mail, describing the 27-year-old’s debut as a substitute for Kieran Tierney on 68 minutes as a “inglorious affair.”
In the 4-0 loss in Amsterdam, he continued, Souttar struggled to hold onto his man until it was too late, and Georginio Wijnaldum headed home Cody Gakpo’s cross, giving the Dutch the upper hand just minutes after the Gers center-back entered the field.
Scotland’s friendly match against the Netherlands ended in a very heavy defeat as three goals in the last 20 minutes guaranteed that it wasn’t their best night.
It was a dismal performance for the defender, who Souttar would have hoped to have an influence off the bench.
His mistake just a few minutes after entering the game will hurt his prospects of starting for Scotland against Northern Ireland the following day, according to Scotland manager Steve Clarke.
Rangers star John Souttar was praised specifically for his efforts in Scotland.
Even though the game was concluded in Amsterdam by a depleted squad, it isn’t a good picture that his side gave up two more goals while he was on the field.
The centre back, who was instrumental in the Gers’ attempt to win the Scottish Premiership, will only be looking to replicate some of the quality he’s shown this season.
