Everton will sell Amadou Onana for just £34.2m this summer if the club are relegated from the Premier League, according to Sport. The Belgium international has emerged as a transfer target for some of Europe’s top clubs including Manchester United, Arsenal and Barcelona. The Toffees have set his asking price at £51.4m initially as they look to solve their current financial crisis, but according to the Spanish news outlet (21 March) that price will drop significantly should they end up in the Championship next season. “Everton values the Senegalese at €60million (£34.2m), an amount that would be assumed by English teams such as Arsenal, also interested in the player,” they wrote. “In case of relegation, Onana could leave for around €40m (£34.2m), an equally demanding price due to the economic situation that Barça is going through.”
The financial situation at Goodison Park is undoubtedly an absolute mess, and the club need to find a way to do something to get out of that hole. If the club are relegated then they face severe issues in raising capital, with the team already taking out loans worth £180m from 777 Partners as they await the takeover approval from the Premier League. Player sales are almost inevitable at this point, but the fees have to make sense otherwise it’s absolutely pointless and won’t help the situation. Top players like Onana, Jarrad Branthwaite and Jordan Pickford will no doubt leave if the club go down to the Championship but Everton must take a page from the books of Leeds United, Southampton and Leicester by keeping hold of those players if they don’t get a proper offer. Onana is clearly a £60m player in this market at worst and the league he is playing in doesn’t change that. Taking £40m would be terrible business. In other Everton news, Barcelona swap deal mooted as four names listed for summer transfer.
