Coventry City owner Doug King gave his reaction to the Sky Blues sensational FA Cup victory over Wolves at Molineux Doug King admitted he was “stunned” by Coventry City’s FA Cup quarter-final win over Wolves and is now dreaming of a Wembley date with local rivals Leicester as he targets a place in the final of the famous competition the club won in 1987. The Foxes are at Chelsea this lunchtime (Sun) in today’s remaining ties from the last eight, and the Sky Blues ’ owner is hoping they win and get pulled out of the hat for an all-Championship semi-final which would be City’s best chance of going one step further. Manchester City are the other confirmed semi-finalists after they beat Newcastle United on Saturday, while Manchester United and Liverpool will slug it out this afternoon to see who joins the other teams for the draw, with the balls being pulled out after today’s final match of the round.
King, meanwhile, told manager Mark Robins before the team’s campaign got underway against Oxford United in January that he wanted a cup run this season. Put to him that he’s delivered one, the owner said: “And half again. What an unbelievable day that was, right to the bitter end. They played really well. It was harsh on them to be 2-1 down, to be fair, but they went all the way and wow, the last seven minutes was madness.” City took the second half lead through Ellis Simms but Wolves fought back to take a 2-1 lead in the last ten minutes of normal time before the Coventry striker scored a second and then set up Haji Wright for a sensational 90+10 minute winner. Speaking to BBC CWR’s Clive Eakin, King said: “I am normally calm watching and I thought we played pretty well. It was pretty exciting how we set up and how we played it. I felt that we would dribble into a 1-0 but then it got away from us and then you think, they’re time wasting and it’s all a bit mucking around. But they fought to the end and they absolutely wanted it today. And they got it in the end. “I am so excited for the manager and the fellas and the City.” Asked how much the win means, he said: “It’s huge. It’s our biggest ever win since ‘87. The stature is going up and we’re in the semi-final, where we haven’t been for 37 years. It’s another trip to Wembley and hopefully it will be a little bit better than the last one. But what an atmosphere and what a game. I’m stunned with it. I loved that they went to the end and they wanted it today and they got it.” As for the job Mark Robins has done, he added: “He’s been here for seven years and we’re trying to really move it forward and give him a chance to get to the top tier and manage in the Premier League. And it shows that we can do it with that performance because we really ran it, to be fair, the way they played in a pretty hostile stadium. So I really thought it was a stunning performance and we got our just desserts.” Commenting on the fans, he said: “Wow, unbelievable. There were 4,800 here and I heard the trains were incredible, singing everywhere and a really good atmosphere outside the ground. This is what the cup does, right? It makes everyone come together and it’s a bit of a carnival. Everyone said it was a great game to watch on the TV and I am super excited about the outcome.”And when asked who he fancies in the semi-final, he said: “I say Leicester, just because I want to go to the final. I fancy the final, come on, we have got to try and win, right. That’s what it’s all about.
