BREAKING NEWS: U21s Let Three-Goal Lead Slip at Watford

An amazing second-half revival saw Watford Under-21’s come from 3-0 down to beat Ipswich 5-3 at London Colney this afternoon. Charlie Daniels’ side had suffered a humiliating 7-0 thrashing at Millwall on Monday afternoon, and when they found themselves three behind at the break then all the signs were the week would be ending as badly as it had started. However, they stunned the Tractor Boys with five goals of their own after the interval and saw keeper Myles Roberts save a penalty as they completed a memorable victory.

The visitors were ahead after only four minutes and although Zak Fraser-Grante had the ball in the net shortly after, the effort was ruled out for offside. The Tractor Boys added their second after 35 minutes, and made it 3-0 shortly before half-time. After the hammering at Millwall on Monday, it meant the young Hornets had shipped 10 goals in 135 minutes of football. However, it certainly didn’t show in the way they responded after the interval. They scored in the 49th minute through one of their triallists to make it 3-1, and then James Collins – who had set up the first goal – headed home to make it 3-2 just a couple of minutes later. The striker then had a shot saved but he wasn’t to be denied in the 63rd minute when he levelled the match up at 3-3. Incredibly, Watford then turned the game on its head totally in the 68th minute when the triallist went round the Ipswich keeper to put them 4-3 ahead. By now there was no stopping the Hornets and they scored their fifth in the space of 25 minutes when James Clarridge headed home at the back post from a free kick. The drama didn’t stop there though, as in the 78th minute Ipswich were awarded a penalty and Aidan Coyne was sent off. However, in a game as mad as this one it was no real surprise when Roberts saved the spot kick to keep the score at 5-3. The win lifts Watford up to sixth in the ten-team Premier League Development League South table, and they host Bristol City at London Colney on Tuesday afternoon.
