Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore made a surprising hiring on Wednesday, poaching Ohio State running backs coach Tony Alford.
There were rumours about a jaw-dropping hire, but no one knew what it meant. Insiders did not want to spoil the surprise, and there was excellent reason for that. But it appears like this has been a done deal for weeks. The background checks for the defensive assistants, which took weeks, did not delay an announcement on Wednesday, implying that they were already done and in the process of happening while Alford was coaching spring ball at OSU.
That isn’t something we can confirm, but it stands to reason that’s what happened, which is fantastic. I hope he memorised the playbook on his way out the door. That is a bonus, just as when the Buckeyes stole Greg Mattison and Al Washington. All is fair in love and battle, and here are three reasons why Sherrone Moore and the Michigan football team won big today.A suitable substitute for Mike Hart.
Denard Robinson was mentioned as a possible successor, but Alford’s resume is impressive. He’s been coaching college running backs for almost 20 years. He was hired at Ohio State by Urban Meyer after previously working at Notre Dame.
Alford boasts a remarkable resume. The Buckeyes have also had some great running backs over the years. However, their offence has turned away from the run since Ryan Day came over as head coach, and I’m sure it was enticing to return to a programme that prefers to ground and pound, as the Buckeyes did under Meyer.
Alford recruited Jordan Marshall and Donovan Edwards. They are familiar with him, which should assist ease the transition. They also know they’ll be taught by someone who has sent numerous players to the NFL.
