Ally McCoist 'surprised' after what happened to 31-year-old Rangers player yesterday

On Thursday, it appeared that Rangers star Jack Butland would be offered a spectacular recall to the England squad after shining at Ibrox, but this did not occur, leaving Ally McCoist astonished.

Butland, 31, has been outstanding this season. With 47 appearances for Philippe Clement’s team, the nine-time England international has kept 23 clear sheets and conceded only 36 goals this season.

He has been linked with an England recall for some weeks.Prior to the team announcement, Danny Murphy expected that Gareth Southgate will continue to use Arsenal custodian Aaron Ramsdale.

He did just that, selecting Arsenal’s Ramsdale and Crystal Palace’s Sam Johnstone to cover Everton and England’s Jordan Pickford in friendlies against Belgium and Brazil, while leaving Butland out.

McCoist, a Rangers great and co-commentator for TNT Sports, discussed Butland’s exclusion during Rangers’ 1-0 loss to Benfica at Ibrox Friday night. McCoist stated that he was “surprised”.

“Mikel Arteta made it plain that David Raya is his number one choice over Aaron Ramsdale. Jack Butland has been playing very, very well up here and I’m surprised he’s not in the squad [instead]. I’m disappointed for him.

Ally McCoist stunned Rangers’ Jack Butland, who was left out by England.

It’s a tragedy, and a warning that any Rangers or Celtic players who believe that playing north of the border will get them into the England squad are mistaken. If anyone could accomplish it, Butland was up for it.

His form has been outstanding, and England is not gifted with goalkeepers. Especially those who are in good form and play consistently. Not only domestically, but also across Europe. Overlooked as Euro 2024 approaches.
