The Sixers are planning an out-of-the-box late-season signing.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the team hopes to sign Kai Jones to a 10-day deal on Friday.In October, the Hornets waived Jones after he requested a trade.Jones’ social media activities caused worry, and he was absent from training camp due to personal issues.Charlotte recorded Jones’ height as 6-foot-11 and weight as 221 pounds. He spent two years with the Hornets after spending two seasons at Texas and being taken 19th overall in the 2021 NBA draft.

The 23-year-old played in 46 NBA games last season, averaging 3.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 0.7 blocks in 12 minutes per game. In 38 G League regular-season games with the Greensboro Swarm over the past two years, he averaged 17.2 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks.

Jones has demonstrated outstanding athleticism, including long, smooth strides in the op court and incredible explosiveness as a shot blocker and dunker.Clearly, he has yet to shown his ability to maintain a consistent role in the NBA.Since Joel Embiid’s left meniscus injury, the Sixers are 7-12. They’ve relied on Paul Reed and Mo Bamba as key centres, with KJ Martin, Tobias Harris, and Nicolas Batum serving as backups on occasion.When asked on Feb. 9 whether Embiid’s injury had an impact on the team’s trade deadline intentions, Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey responded, “Yeah, I think our aim was to get a big — which didn’t happen. But aside from that, no. We intended to expand our playoff rotation this year.”

The Sixers, who were rumoured to have strong trade interest in Andre Drummond, eventually acquired Buddy Hield and Cameron Payne.They also acquired Kyle Lowry through a buyout.Darius Bazley, a Delaware Blue Coats standout, left the Sixers after signing a 10-day deal last month.He moved on to join the Jazz.Jones last appeared in the NBA more than 11 months ago, in Charlotte’s 2022-23 season finale. The Sixers will be hosting the Hornets on Saturday night.
