Sickening’ – Pundit moots points deduction after Rangers incident, ‘It would be Mayhem’

Tm McManus has mooted a potential points deduction for inappropriate chanting after what happened during the Rangers game against Hibernian on Sunday (10 March).Writing on the Daily Record website on Wednesday (13 March), the pundit said the unprintable chanting from the Gers fans towards Hibs forward Martin Boyle during the game at Easter Road was “terrible” and “sickening”. Discussing the potential penalties that could be handed out to clubs for the actions of their supporters, McManus suggested that docking points could be “the way forward”, but he conceded that such a response would cause “mayhem”. Hibs’ statement acknowledges the problem in their own support,” said McManus. “It’s time more clubs did the same. Sunday looked like the final straw. The chants from Rangers fans towards Martin Boyle – which can’t be printed in this paper – were terrible. Sickening.

“Don’t think this is a pop just at Rangers. Every club has a problem element. It’s widespread. Quite clearly Hibs have had enough and don’t want to put their players or fans through any more. They want the supporters to be safe going to games. Is cutting allocations going to make a difference? Does it matter if it’s 3,500 people or 1,500 people? The danger is the chants are still there. “The chanting, particularly from the Old Firm, is out of order but how do you police it? Do we start fining clubs? That won’t make much difference to the big clubs unless it was huge penalties being handed out. “Or do we go the whole hog and start docking teams points? Maybe that’s the way forward and it would come down on the authorities to police that but imagine the outcry? It would be mayhem. The simple fact of the matter is this is a societal problem and it’s down to individuals to realise they’re out of order.” It is clearly an issue right across Scottish football and one that isn’t going to be an easy fix for the authorities to get to the bottom of after it’s gone on for so long. There are a lot of eyes currently on fan behaviour in Scotland, with the debate around flares also rumbling on. But some of the chanting that can be heard is completely unacceptable and doesn’t belong inside a football stadium. While they stem from deep-lying issues, there is no reason for certain things to be sung and for the football to once again become the side story. It’s incredibly unlikely that points deductions will be enforced as that wouldn’t be fair on the teams or the everyday fan, but it certainly isn’t a topic that’s going to go away any time soon.
