Rangers fans will be keeping a tight eye on the club’s transfer activities as Nils Koppen prepares to travel to Italy for the TransferRoom summit.
The club has already spent £4.5 million on Mohamed Diomande, so the focus now shifts to the recruitment team’s summer targets.
Much of this may depend on how the season finishes – Rangers are still in three competitions, including the Europa League, with qualification to the new-look Champions League hanging in the balance.
Nils Koppen’s attendance at the event in Rome suggests that Rangers are open to making transfers this summer, which is a positive sign for fans.
Nils Koppen has a developing Rangers transfer agenda.
Nils Koppen’s attendance in the TransferRoom Summit is noteworthy for several reasons, including the need to resolve outstanding transfer difficulties at Ibrox.
Abdallah Sima, Fabio Silva, and Oscar Cortes are on different loan deals that will expire in the summer.
All have expressed an interest in remaining in Glasgow, but all are realistically priced out of the Ibrox club’s budget.
What does this mean? So either Rangers find a way to extend all three players’ contracts, or they structure the transactions in such a way that the club can finance them.
Fabio Silva’s permanent departure seems unlikely, despite his desire to stay. Oscar Cortes is recovering from a “severe” injury and may profit from an extended loan-to-buy.
Brighton’s Abdallah Sima is out of contract next summer and has been out for two months due to injury. He cost the Premier League club nearly £6 million in 2021 and is yet to feature for them.
Rangers have several players out of contract this summer, with only a few likely to sign new contracts.
High-earning players such as Borna Barisic (whose agent will be in Italy next week), Ryan Jack (now injured), and Kemar Roofe (still to prove his health) may leave.
TransferRoom summit points to proactive Gers
All of this indicates to a hectic but intriguing summer for Rangers, and it’s encouraging to see Nils Koppen adopting a proactive approach to the window.
As Philippe Clement strives to establish a successful Rangers team, the Ibrox side will prioritise early business.
Remarkably, if things go as well as we hoped back in October, the Belgian might be on his way to an incredible four titles, albeit that is still a long way off.
However, the club’s recent upturn in form suggests that regardless of how the next transfer window unfolds, any new players will be joining a club and atmosphere that has proven it can and will improve players.
Not only that, but it’s a setting that few want to leave.
