NEWS: It is risky for anyone to write off Coventry City against Wolves.

Coventry City opinion from CoventryLive as Sky Blues reporter Andy Turner looks ahead at the task in hand this weekend when the Championship side attempt to get one over Premier League Wolves

Coventry City's Milan van EwijkWill Milan van Ewijk of Coventry City spearhead the festivities on Saturday at Molineux at full time? This weekend is significant for Coventry City because it may be the club’s fourth trip to Wembley in the previous seven years. If they can pull it off, that would be quite an accomplishment. Wolverhampton Wanderers, a resurgent Premier League team in their sixth season back at the top of English football, stand in their way. They have won nine games, drawn three, and lost just three of their past fifteen games across all competitions.Similar to the Sky Blues, Gary O’Neil’s team is looking up, sitting comfortably in ninth place in the division and fighting for a great finish on two fronts: the league and the FA Cup. There is no doubt that Mark Robins’ team is the underdog going into this Saturday’s game at Molineux. There is a clear financial and quality difference, which should, in theory, benefit the elite team.

However, as everyone knows, things don’t always go as planned, and the FA Cup in especially has a history of causing upsets and surprises. Over the years, City has undoubtedly experienced both humiliation and humility from lower-tier teams as well as the rare “giant” killer. The most recent shock came in Coventry’s debut season in League Two, when they defeated then-Premiership Stoke 2-1 in the 2018 third round. They then came agonizingly close in the fourth round of 2022, forcing Southampton into extra time while putting on a magnificent display that kept them in close company throughout. And before Saturday’s match, supporters of the Sky Blues will be aware that, should they perform at their peak on the day, they stand a good chance of making it to the semifinals and adding another chapter to the club’s contemporary history. This seems like an ideal time to play Wolves, who, despite their recent success, are set to be missing two of their best players in Pedro Neto and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, leaving O’Neil with just Pablo Sarabia as his senior striker. Not that they don’t have enough of youthful talent to cover, but in a game of narrow margins, every little bit counts.

City will undoubtedly rise to the occasion, as each player is eager to put himself to the test against elite Premier League players and to give it their best in front of what promises to be an electrifying crowd in which the Sky Blue Army will play a major role. In the meantime, the home crowd will undoubtedly believe that their team will triumph. But it is risky for anyone to write off Robins’ guys. The team wants to play Premier League football, and a win would give the players more confidence that they can advance to the play-offs and possibly face their rivals in the big leagues. However, all we can hope for is a performance in which everyone feels proud, and we’ll see where it goes from there. All that anyone can ask for is that they fight.
