‘Extremely Offensive’ – Hibs ace singles out Rangers star after Easter Road clash

James Tavernier has 'unfinished business' as Rangers captain happy to finish career at Ibrox - Football Scotland

Jair Tavares describes James Tavernier as a “extremely offensive” Rangers player with “excellent” set pieces.

In an interview with A Bola (12 March), the Hibs attacker praised Portuguese compatriot Fabio Silva following the 2-0 victory at Easter Road. He also mentioned three more vital players in Philippe Clement’s team.

Tavares cited “midfield pendulum” John Lundstram and the “very, very creative” Todd Cantwell as key players for the Gers, but also noted a potential flaw he believes Benfica will exploit in their return leg at Ibrox on Thursday (14 March): the Gers relinquish possession under pressure.

He stated, translated into English: “It is a highly vertical team that always seeks to elevate the intensity of the game. However, it also works well in short combos.

“When it comes to defects, honestly, I don’t know if I have much to say, but I think this is a team that, when under pressure, tends to lose possession of the ball.”

He mentioned James Tavernier, the captain, as a key figure. He is seasoned, physically powerful, and fiercely offensive. In set pieces, he is outstanding.

“Then there’s John Lundstram, the midfield pendulum; he’s also very physically strong and controls the team’s rhythms.”

“Todd Cantwell is an extremely creative midfielder. The ball never cries at his feet, as the saying goes in Portuguese.

Rangers stars face critical test as Benfica visit Ibrox.

Cantwell has been one of many injured players in the Light Blues roster recently, so it is unknown whether he will be ready for Clement in Europe.

After a 2-2 draw in Lisbon, an understrength team has continued to lose players and faces a difficult challenge in the second leg, nevertheless.

Tavernier’s impressive performance at full-back has continued this season. He was the top scorer in the Europa League two years ago, and it’s likely he’ll be called upon again this week.

Lundstram’s importance to Clement has been underscored this week, making an extension to his expiring contract a priority despite continuing talks with the club if an expensive replacement is not needed.

Rangers

Rangers won the cup in difficult circumstances at Easter Road, but the Portuguese giants will pose a greater challenge.

If being hurried off the ball in the face of pressing is a reasonable criticism, the players must address it ahead of what might be a tough match in Glasgow.
