Daily Dish: Indiana, UNC headline 9 programs with most at stake in 2024 college basketball transfer portal

Watch these nine teams closely as the 2024 transfer portal period approaches.

The 2024 transfer portal cycle for college basketball begins on Monday. Grad transfers have begun to arrive on the web, although underclassmen have only a few hours after Selection Sunday to search for their new residence during the 45-day window (one of several new alterations).

The cycle for 2023 has been a huge success.

In the SEC, Dalton Knecht, a transfer from Tennessee, won Player of the Year.

The Pac-12 Player of the Year was a transfer, Caleb Love from Arizona.

The AAC’s co-Player of the Year, Chris Youngblood of South Florida, was a transfer.

This week, Marcus Domask of Illinois and Hunter Sallis of Wake Forest were both selected to the First Team, All-Conference. They were both from the transfer cycle of 2023. Nor were they necessarily the most well-known names. It is possible to locate impact players almost anyplace.

The portal is more important than ever, and coaching staffs around the nation are already creating huge boards and strategies to meet their specific needs. Chaos is predicted to ensue. These nine teams will leave their mark on the 2024 transfer portal cycle in a variety of ways.

GEORGETOWN HOYAS

Ed Cooley did not come to Georgetown from Providence to be the perennial laughingstock of the Big East. Georgetown’s offseason may begin in earnest in just forty minutes. In the 2024 cycle, the Hoyas are anticipated to be key players, and Cooley requires a little bit of everything. To strengthen one of the poorest defences in the nation, adding more size would be a smart place to start. It would also be beneficial to have a large guard relieve Jayden Epps of some of his playmaking duties. If Georgetown hopes to contend in the top-heavy Big East, it simply needs to have a significant impact on its transfers.

ILLINOIS FIGHTING ILLINI

Brad Underwood took a big risk when selecting this Illinois team. The Illini have big aspirations for March, and he finished second in the Big Ten.

It’s going to get interesting when it finishes (Underwood hopes for April in Arizona).

Justin Harmon, Quincy Guerrier, Marcus Domask, and Terrence Shannon Jr. are all ineligible. Two First Team, All-Big Ten players and two other indisputable rotation players need to be replaced. After a much-improved senior season, Coleman Hawkins appears like a safe pick to pursue his professional goals in a highly open 2024 NBA Draft. Five rotation players are eliminated as a result.

Many underclassmen who were not given the opportunity to be the star this year will be in departure talks with Brad Underwood. Sencire Harris decided to redshirt prior to the start of the season, and Luke Goode and Dain Dainja were also forced to sit out significant portions of the schedule. Ty Rodgers has been a lock for the starting lineup for Illinois the whole season, but his status in the starting lineup for the finale has not been guaranteed. Since December 1, Illinois’ youthful players, including Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn, Niccolo Moretti, and Amani Hansberry, have together accumulated four games with double-digit minutes, indicating that this veteran-heavy squad is competitive right now.

As a big-game hunter in the portal, Illinois may need to assemble a crew almost entirely from scratch during this cycle. That might even entail making transfers during Zoom calls during the Big Dance.

It may be necessary for you to reload the Illinois Inquirer daily in order to stay up to date on all the new players Illinois is hoping to sign this summer.

AUBURN TIGERS

Auburn did a great job selling big men through the transfer portal. Should Johni Broome decide to become pro, Auburn will be searching for the top frontcourt players available, so players need to be lining up to board the Walker Kessler or Broome jetpack.

The more fascinating discussion in Auburn’s war room would centre on the eventual rearcourt realignment.

Six different Tiger guards have averaged at least 13 minutes per game this season, and Auburn wants to go 10 deep.

Aden Holloway, Tre Donaldson, Chad Baker-Mazara, Denver Jones, KD Johnson, and Chris Moore are among the players who can return, in that order. Oh, and Tahaad Pettiford, a powerful freshman point guard ranked in the top 25 at Auburn, is coming.

Is the inn sufficiently spacious?

TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS

Tennessee should have some significant influence in the transfer portal thanks to Dalton Knecht’s incredible ascent to the SEC Player of the Year award. Josiah-Jordan James, Santiago Vescovi, and Knecht are no longer eligible, but Tennessee might become a very selective big-game hunter if they have the appropriate amount of luck in the stay-or-go department. To complement Jonas Aidoo, Zakai Zeigler, Jahmai Mashack, Tobe Awaka, Jordan Gainey, and a plethora of young players who are getting better all the time, the Vols will need another big wing. Tennessee might have an excellent core, but is it capable of making another huge leap through the portal to move up to a higher level?

TEXAS LONGHORNS

Texas has a three-man, top-10 recruiting class on the way, headlined by five-star, bucket-getting guard Tre Johnson, but Texas will have big decisions to make in the portal. Dylan Disu, Max Abmas, IT Horton and Brock Cunningham are all out of eligibility, and Dillon Mitchell will undoubtedly go through the 2024 NBA Draft process. There could be other exits as well. Texas needs to get Kadin Shedrick and Tyrese Hunter back before hitting the portal for more veterans and lots of shooting to complement what could be a very young (but talented) 2024-25 roster.

ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS

In Arkansas, there’s just a lot going on. Although there are several great players on the Hogs’ roster, they haven’t gelled as a team this season. It appears that change is coming. Six players on this elite team—including Makhi Mitchell, El Ellis, and Jeremiah Davenport—are not eligible. The two top scorers in Arkansas, Tramon Mark and Khalif Batte, must choose whether to run it back. Devo Davis might return, but it seems unlikely.

There seems to be an abundance of changes ahead.Maybe even with the coaching staff on board.

Whichever is out injured, Arkansas will once more need to undergo a major overhaul that includes a massive transfer portal class.

MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS

Malik Hall and Tyson Walker will be ineligible, but Michigan State is about to experience a significant amount of turnover. There will be a lot of exit talks with Mady Sissoko and AJ Hoggard. What does Jaden Akins want to do? The frontcourt of Michigan State is severely lacking in talent and has few reliable big wings. Although Tom Izzo has been against portals in the past few cycles, he is not against them overall. Walker and Joey Hauser were added by Izzo through the portal; if he wants MSU to win in 2024–2025, he must recruit players with similar qualities. Big men are in, but the first priority may need to be a spiteful, bipartisan wing. You take this collection of young guards, including Jeremy Fears Jr., Tre Holloman, Kur Teng, and Jase Richardson, and you add a veteran dominant wing? Please say yes.

INDIANA HOOSIERS

We already know that Trey Galloway will lead the offence next season, Mike Woodson will coach, five-star wing Liam McNeeley will depart, and Kel’el Ware is playing like a first-round choice.

After that, IU will have everything up for grabs during the soon-to-come offseason.

In the final stretch, Mackenzie Mgbako, a five-star freshman, has begun to come into his own. Will he go or remain?

When Malik Reneau plays for Indiana against top-150 opponents, the team has a dismal defensive rating of 112.7, but the sophomore big man can be a total nuisance in the paint. Will he go or remain?

Major turning points in Indiana’s summer will come from the Reneau-Mgbako decisions, but before they make those decisions, IU has to use the transfer portal frequently. If Indiana hopes to compete in the redesigned Big Ten next season, it will probably need a number of transfer guards.

In the cycle of 2022, Maryland discovered Jahmir Young. Ace Baldwin was signed by Penn State in the 2023 cycle. In the 2024 cycle, can Indiana find a point guard who can move the needle?

Perhaps Minnesota can serve as an example for Indiana to follow.Ben Johnson managed to get three new players into Minnesota’s backcourt and get Blake Payne and Dawson Garcia back to lead a potent frontcourt. Though it hasn’t always been easy, Elijah Hawkins, Mike Mitchell, and Cam Christie have gelled into a potent threesome. Finding three new guards that mesh well together is a difficult task, but if Minnesota can pull it off, Indiana ought to be able to as well.

Given the possibility of a total and total revamp at IU, this is the largest offseason of the Woodson era.

Perhaps this will be a good change.

NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS

For UNC in the 2024 cycle, finding a replacement for Armando Bacot will be crucial.Although Bacot’s 14 points and 10 rebounds are listed on the transfer site, his defence has been outstanding for a much-better Carolina team in the background. The incoming big man at UNC needs to be a two-way player. The 2023 cycle included some really large males, including Hunter Dickinson, Kel’el Ware, and Jesse Edwards. In 2024, UNC may want to add a big guy with a comparable effect to Jalen Washington, who will soon turn junior.

And don’t undervalue RJ Davis’s contribution here. For large men, playing alongside Davis, the ACC Player of the Year, is an intriguing hiccup in the road. Huge stay-or-go decisions are on Davis’ plate, and the outcome will affect Hubert Davis’ ambitions for building his roster.
