Coventry sold Viktor Gyokeres for a club-record fee last season and could reap even more rewards
Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres has been on a roll this season, and the striker’s goal-laden performance has drawn interest from all across Europe. Coventry City will be closely monitoring this player.
With 21 goals for the Sky Blues in all competitions last season, the former Brighton striker was among the Championship’s most prolific attackers. However, he looks set to completely destroy that total in the Portuguese capital, as the opening goal in Sporting’s 3-0 victory at Estoril brings his total to 33 goals in just 37 games for the league leaders.
Clubs around the continent have expressed interest in hiring him, but it might have a significant impact on Coventry as Arsenal appears undecided about making the move.
Viktor Gyokeres transfer latest
TEAMtalk claims that Arsenal has opted not to sign Ivan Toney from Brentford in the upcoming months and has instead created a shortlist of four strikers in an effort to locate the player who can propel them even closer to the title.
Despite being significantly more prolific than other strikers in the title battle like Erling Haaland, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, and Julian Alvarez, Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah have not yet met the necessary benchmark this season.
Because of this, the report suggests that Gyokeres is on that shortlist, along with Dusan Vlahovic of Juventus, Joshua Zirkzee of Bologna, and Benjamin Sesko, a young player from Leipzig. Mikel Arteta believes that these players can help the Gunners advance after they have already matched Liverpool and City this season.
But there’s a catch: Gyokeres has an £86 million release clause, which means Arsenal might be hesitant to pursue a move for the Swedish striker. Because the Gunners are reportedly concerned about adhering to FFP standards, no transaction may be completed on their behalf, leaving Coventry to wonder what might have been.
The potential consequences of Viktor Gyokeres’ unsuccessful transfer to Arsenal for Coventry City
With the £86 million stated, that would obviously be a massive price for the team to acquire given their Championship status. The Sky Blues have reportedly negotiated a 15% sell on provision into the agreement that sent him to Sporting Lisbon.
Viktor Gyokeres – list of Championship seasons for Coventry | Games | Goals |
2020/21 | 19 | 3 |
2021/22 | 45 | 17 |
2022/23 | 46 | 21 |
It’s unclear if that represents 15% of the total charge or 15% of Gyokeres’ profit according to prior agreements; either way, the difference isn’t very big, with both scenarios coming in at between £12.9 million and £12.9 million.
This would give Mark Robins an enormous warchest to spend on players for the upcoming campaign. Having strengthened the majority of his squad’s depth with the summer sales of Gyokeres and Gustavo Hamer, he may be able to use the money earned to sign players like Milan van Ewijk, Bobby Thomas, Haji Wright, and others.
How Coventry City might make use of the sell-on fee following the sale of Viktor Gyokeres
One might make a strong argument for adding a new custodian after taking a look at Coventry’s roster. After an incredible season the previous time out, Ben Wilson lost his spot. Although Bradley Collins is currently wearing that shirt, Wilson may be heading out due to some fierce competition.
Positions at left back may very well be in high demand. Because Coventry boasted Ian Maatsen two seasons ago, Jay Dasilva has been Coventry’s man on the wing alongside Jake Bidwell this season. However, the quality that could be bridged with that £10 million increase might be decisive in the promotion fight.
While midfielders like Josh Eccles, Ben Sheaf, and Viktor Torp have excelled this season, the club remains unclear due to Callum O’Hare’s expiring contract, which could be examined in the summer.
