The safe standing project for Luton Town FC has been completed.

According to Luton Town Football Club, the safe standing space for home fans is now finished.

The team had hoped it would be ready for the Manchester United match last month, but it will make its debut on Saturday against Aston Villa.

According to Chief Executive Gary Sweet, that game may now draw the largest crowd of the year.

The Kenilworth Road pitch was no longer the league’s smallest, he claimed.

After the 7 January Hatters game against Bolton Wanderers, work on installing the safe standing area began.

Fans who were away already benefited from a comparable space.

Mr. Sweet said that the team had “challenged the market by installing a bespoke design into the Oak [Road Stand] – designed in-house and manufactured specially for our use” in the programme for the Aston Villa match.

“No such design exists outside Kenilworth Road,” he stated.

The team announced that it had received numerous inquiries concerning why it was investing money in a standing area in a facility it intended to abandon before moving to the Power Court stadium.

Mr. Sweet stated: “With the added benefit of enabling more fans inside the stadium, pay-back would be well under two seasons due to the increase in capacity.

“This increase has been made possible by a number of strategies, including increasing the number of usable rows, decreasing the segregation zone, having all standing seats as allocated positions and losing one gangway.”

He went on to say that “today is likely to see the biggest attendance at Kenilworth Road since we took over custodianship of the club in 2008” because of the additional capacity the project created.

“Kenilworth Road took its fair share of derision in the summer for being the smallest in the division but that is no longer the case,” he stated.
