NEWS UPDATE: Mark Lawwell given Celtic send-off by Brendan Rodgers as transfer chief quits Football Scotland

Together with lead first team scout Joe Dudgeon, the Hoops’ head of recruitment has resigned from his position. Mark Lawwell’s “tireless” efforts were acknowledged by Brendan Rodgers after the shocking resignation of the Celtic transfer chief. Lawwell left his position as head of recruitment less than two years ago, and the Hoops have verified this. As part of a significant backstage shake-up this summer, lead first team scout Joe Dudgeon will follow chairman Peter’s son out the door.

After a decade with City Group, Lawwell joined Celtic in May 2022, to much fanfare from Ange Postecoglou. However, the head scout, who was in charge of four transfer windows, has made the decision to step aside in order to pursue other chances. Lawwell and Dudgeon have been placed on gardening leave until the end of the current season while the Celts look to fill their places. Rodgers, the manager of Parkhead, stated: “As part of the club’s recruitment team, Mark and Joe have worked tirelessly to bring success to Celtic, and I would like to wish them both the very best for the future.” “Everyone at Celtic thanks Mark and Joe for their contribution and dedication to the club, and we wish them both every success going forward,” Chief Executive Michael Nicholson continued. After two dismal transfer windows this season, unhappy Celtic fans had taken to criticizing Lawwell. Although the Hoops spent over £22 millionK on nine new players in the summer, only Luis Palma and Yang have had a significant influence on the starting lineup. The expectation was that Celts would make up for their errors by bringing in the new talent Rodgers had sought in January, but the only players to join were Nicolas Kuhn and Adam Idah, leaving the left-back position unfilled. Last week, Lawwell Sr. acknowledged that the Hoops did not perform well enough in the January market. As a result, the Glasgow giants will be taking a different approach moving ahead with a new squad.
