Sheffield United are dealing with another significant blow ahead of their upcoming Championship match against Stoke City, as key midfielder Gus Hamer will be unavailable due to suspension. Hamer received his fifth yellow card of the season during the recent 3-1 loss to Middlesbrough, penalized for kicking the ball away at a Boro free-kick. This suspension comes after Vini Souza also missed the Middlesbrough game for a similar suspension but is set to return against Stoke.
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder expressed his frustration at Hamer’s yellow card, acknowledging that referees have been stricter this season about such incidents. Despite the setback, Wilder noted that they would “get through it,” and welcomed Souza’s return to the midfield as a boost. Hamer, the Blades’ top scorer, will now have additional time to recover from a tight calf issue ahead of their next match on November 2 against Blackburn Rovers.
In the absence of both Hamer and Souza against Middlesbrough, 20-year-old Sydie Peck and fellow youngster Oliver Arblaster were tasked with leading the midfield. Peck struggled and was substituted after about an hour, with Emmanuel Latte Lath scoring the winner for Middlesbrough late in the match.
Sheffield United will need to adapt once again as they face Stoke City, hoping to avoid a third consecutive defeat in the league.
