Latest Report: “He’s not up to par” – Player questioned after Brighton exit as hype turns into criticism….

Brighton & Hove Albion earned over €10 million from Billy Gilmour’s summer transfer to Napoli. Despite joining the Italian club with high expectations, the Scotland international had to wait for his first Serie A start, which came against Empoli due to Stanislav Lobotka’s injury.

However, Gilmour’s performance in that match was underwhelming, as he struggled physically and didn’t make a strong defensive impact. Former Napoli midfielder Massimo Mauro shared his concerns on Mediaset, as reported by AreaNapoli, saying, “In my opinion, he’s not up to par.” Mauro also questioned Gilmour’s suitability as a replacement for Lobotka, adding, “If Stanislav Lobotka is still missing, it will be a big problem for Napoli.”

The shift in narrative around Gilmour has been swift, with initial excitement giving way to doubts in a matter of days, a reaction typical of the intense media environment around Napoli. Yet, it’s worth remembering that Gilmour faced similar challenges when he first arrived at Brighton. He struggled for regular game time in his first season but grew into a key player over the next campaign.

Napoli might need to show patience as Gilmour adapts to a new country and league. Rushing to judge his potential based on just one start in Serie A could be premature.
