Celtic’s women’s team put up a valiant effort but ultimately fell to a 4-0 defeat against Real Madrid in their second match of the Women’s Champions League group stage.
The match, held at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium, saw an early strike from Scotland’s Caroline Weir, who gave Madrid the lead with a stunning long-range goal just seven minutes into the game.
Despite this early setback, Celtic showed resilience, managing to keep Madrid to just one goal throughout the first half. The Hoops held firm as the hosts missed several opportunities to extend their lead, giving Elena Sadiku’s side hope as they headed into the second half.
Celtic came out stronger after the break, pushing forward and creating key chances to equalize. Both Emma Lawton and Murphy Agnew had opportunities to score but were unable to convert. As the match progressed, Madrid began to reassert their control, with Signe Bruun heading in a precise cross from Eva Navarro in the 72nd minute to make it 2-0.
Caroline Moller then added a third goal for the Spanish side with a skillful lob over the Celtic goalkeeper, while Linda Caicedo rounded off the victory with a penalty, securing Real Madrid’s first win of their Champions League campaign.
Though the result was a tough one for Celtic, manager Elena Sadiku can find positives in her team’s determined performance against a formidable opponent.
With two group stage matches played, Celtic remain without points or goals but will aim to build on this experience as they continue their European journey.
