‘BRUTAL AND MERCILESS’: Edmonton Maple Leafs fan who murdered wife gets life sentence

Vasile Roman, an Edmonton man who beat his wife to death in a delusional rage, has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 13 years. Roman, who believed his wife Daniela was unfaithful, attacked her with a hammer in December 2022. Despite his delusional beliefs, a psychologist determined Roman understood the wrongfulness of his actions and was fit to stand trial. Roman had a history of paranoid, abusive behavior, and his sons described the lasting trauma their mother’s murder has caused.

Roman, a truck driver who emigrated from Romania, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. The violence occurred in the family home, where Daniela’s mother was present during the attack. Roman, 54 at the time of the crime, called 911 to report the murder. Although he claimed his wife had been unfaithful, no evidence supported this. The couple’s sons detailed the emotional devastation in their victim impact statements, with one son recalling how he now cries during every mother-and-son dance he photographs at weddings.

Roman’s history of abusive behavior, including a previous attempt to drown his wife in 2014, further compounded the tragedy. The sentence handed down ensures that, while Roman is eligible for parole after 13 years, he will remain under supervision for the rest of his life.
