New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers didn’t hold back after the team’s 20-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills, blaming wide receiver Mike Williams for a crucial interception in the fourth quarter. With the Jets down by three points and driving for a potential game-winning score, Rodgers targeted Williams with a deep pass. However, Williams adjusted his route mid-play, allowing Bills’ cornerback Taron Johnson to make the interception that sealed the win for Buffalo.
Rodgers was visibly frustrated on the sidelines following the turnover. After the game, he criticized Williams for veering from the intended route, stating, “We were supposed to have two verticals—Allen [Lazard] down the seam, Mike [Williams] down the red line [sideline go-route]. I’m throwing a no-look to the red line, and when I check back, he’s running an in-breaker. It’s gotta be down the red line.”
The play proved to be a pivotal moment, as it cut short the Jets’ chances of completing a comeback. Williams, a former first-round pick who had previously been a key target during his time with the Chargers, has struggled to establish the same connection with Rodgers, now ranking as a fourth or fifth option in the Jets’ offense.
Despite the disappointing loss that dropped the Jets to a 2-4 record, the team showed progress on both sides of the ball, following the departure of former head coach Robert Saleh. The Jets’ offense generated over 400 yards, while their defense held Bills quarterback Josh Allen to just 18 rushing yards. Nevertheless, the costly mistake and the ensuing criticism have added tension to the team’s struggle for consistency this season.
